I recently read an article that was making a case for the most unintentionally homoerotic horror films, and it had me thinking about unintentional gay subtext in general, fandom foundation that it is. I think that a really great example of this is the Star Fox series. And have thought so for so long.

For Ten and maybe also Levi

I do not believe that any of these are permanently miss-able, but they are not all acquired through the main story.

1. Marogareh – Acquired automatically

6. Hifumi – Junk Shop (Great Underpass of Ginza)
7. Kamudo – Junk Shop (Great Underpass of Ginza)
8. Narukami – Defeat Thor (story boss)
9. Anathema – Defeat Ose (story boss)
10. Miasma – Defeat Mizuchi (story boss)
11. Nirvana – Junk Shop (Asakusa)
12. Murakumo – Defeat Ongyo-ki (optional boss, Ikebukuro) and find in a cube
13. Geis – Finish Manikin Boy puzzle in Asakusa

16. Gehenna – Junk Shop (Asakusa)
17. Kamurogi – Junk Shop (Asakusa – Collector Manikin)

20. Vimana – Junk Shop (Asakusa – Collector Manikin)
21. Gundari – Defeat Bishamonten (optional boss, Kimon Stone needed to unseal Temple of Ueno. This is obtained by sacrificing a demon and letting a miner use it in the subway tunnels beneath Yarakucho Station. Again, the demon will not be returned)
22. Sophia – Junk Shop (Asakusa – Collector Manikin)
23. Gaea – Mantra HQ B1F (open door with 24 base strength, min)
24. Kailash – Junk Shop (Tower of Kagutsuchi 3)
25. Masakados – Bandou Shrine (after obtaining all other Magatama)

True Demon Ending

Broadly, this requires doing two separate but inter-connected things; defeating the ten Fiends and completing all five Kalpas in the Labyrinth of Amala. A scene will occur at the bottom of the Labyrinth of Amala, and the player will be locked into the True Demon Ending, regardless of prior alignment.

Note that the True Demon Ending adds an additional final boss that is significantly more difficult than the normal final boss and requires very specific preparation.

1. Matador – Story boss
First Kalpa unlocked

2. Daisoujou – East section of the area outside of the entrance to the Mantra HQ
3. Hell Biker – Walk south on the highway near the (previously blocked) exit from Mantra HQ
Second Kalpa unlocked

4. White Rider – Finds YOU after you witness a scene at the entrance of the Third Kalpa (may require going to the Terminal in Asakusa)
5. Red Rider – Outside Terminal in Great Underpass of Ginza
6. Black Rider – Room 204B in Shinjuku Medical Center, after completing the Obelisk
Third Kalpa unlocked

7. Dante – Third Kalpa. I am not sure if he influences the appearance of any of the others, but it is probably best to defeat him as soon as possible
8. Pale Rider – Asakusa, will be encountered during the story if other Fiends have been defeated, before going to Yushima Station
9. Mother Harlot – After completing Yoyogi Park, at the West Park Entrance
10. Trumpeter – Yarakucho Station, will be encountered during the story if other Fiends have been defeated
Fourth Kalpa unlocked

The Fifth Kalpa is unlocked by defeating Beelzebub in the Fourth Kalpa and then:

"Returning to the Second Kalpa and talking to the Efreet at the end of the Cursed Corridor, talking to Loki in Nyx's Lounge in Ginza, and finally receiving the Star Key from the Collector Manikin in Asakusa. The key must be used to open the locked door in the Third Kalpa and using the alternate Warp Zone to activate the switch in the Fourth Kalpa. The Candelabrum required to open the Fifth Kalpa is none other than the one given directly to the Demi-Fiend by the Lady In Black."

These are suggestions based on my personal experiences with the music. I’m not promising that anyone else is going to like them, nor am I trying to say that these are the best albums of the year in any kind of pseudo-objective way.

Despite owning this game for a month and a half or something, I didn't get the chance to start playing until last week (during my break between semesters). I haven't played at all since (when I put in about 20 hours) but I am eagerly anticipating jumping back in this weekend.

This game has been hailed as one of if not the best JRPGs of this (console) generation and something of a revival of the genre. While I feel like this opinion is mostly supported by individuals who don't actually play JRPGs, my takeaway so far is that Xenoblade is an absolutely amazing game and needs to be played by everyone for reasons that go far beyond showing Nintendo of America that the US still has a market for this (Xenoblade was part of the almost tragic Operation Rainfall movement)

I'm not going to give the game a review, but I am going to make a short writeup of the things that make this game, in my opinion, special.

If there are any spoilers here they are really minor )

Note that this is an extremely twisty film, and experiencing these twists in context is significant to the experience of the movie. Not that I think the movie isn't enjoyable if you know what happens; I think I liked it even more on the second viewing. But there is definitely something to be said for puzzling through it on your own.

So if you have any interest in seeing this, and you really should, even if horror isn't normally your thing (the horror in this movie isn't going to stick with you, and is mostly presented in a very...THIS IS A MOVIE fashion) approach this post cautiously.

I'm also posting the old ones, because I went back and read them and they are waaaaaay better.

Last time I gave La Dispute the spotlight, so now it's EMA's turn.

I'm revisiting a story format that I did once, because I really enjoy it and I feel that the other instance is some of if not the finest writing I've ever done, where I write a series of very short narratives inspired by the songs on a particular album. In this case, Past Life Martyred Saints.

This is very much a first draft, though, and I'm still disappointed in most of them. Except for Coda which is perfect.

I saw Joseph carrying the gun, I saw Mary carrying the gun, I used to carry the gun... )

I never actually got around to posting my write-up for my year-end album list. I suppose I still could, but now that we’re on the eve of March it would feel a bit silly.

In 2010 I refused to declare a single favorite album, but I did select a top five (looking back now it would be revised to six). For 2011 (I almost typed “this year”) that number was three; Destroyer’s Kaputt, EMA’s Past Life Martyred Saints, and La Dispute’s Wildlife.

Since I didn’t get to gush over these in that year end post—well I did, but no one saw it, I’m just going to do so here. But I’m not going to gush over all of them. Rather, I’m going to gush over the one that is never actually going to get the recognition it deserves.

Dan Bejar (Destroyer, among other things) is and has been a well respected musician in the indie community for something like fifteen years now. That he could put out a masterful album surprised no one, and furthermore it would have no trouble getting attention, mass and critical. EMA doesn’t have the same pedigree, but Erika Anderson’s old project Gowns was developing a following and the sound and attitude of EMA build directly from that, so Past Life enjoyed a sort of breakout success.

La Dispute, on the other hand... )

And I'm not going to summarize the story, but I will talk about my overall reaction to it.

This started when I needed to draw something that wasn't Fox, Falco, or Mienshao. And it's been awhile since I drew birdsona (since...I started Fox's blog, probably). So I did this:

--So I finally looked it up and the way debuffs break down is actually like this:

Tarunda - decreases physical AND magical attack by 1/8 for All
Enemies
-> Warcry - decreases physical and magical attack by 1/4 for all
enemies

Sukunda - decreases accuracy and evasion by 1/8 for All Enemies
-> Fog Breath - decreases accuracy and evasion by 1/4 for All
Enemies

Rakunda - decreases defense (phys and magic) by 1/8 for All
Enemies
-> Taunt - decreases defense by 1/4 for All Enemies BUT it also
increases physical attack by 1/2 for the enemy party (Taunt is
2x Rakunda AND 4x Tarukaja on the enemy).

Game you are ridiculous. You are being ridiculous right now.

And I'm really not sure what to make of the fact that I've only been pushing these to half of their effectiveness and they're STILL making things hopelessly easy.

(buffs all work normally, with four levels, so idek)

I feel like noting that while Nocturne makes use of the demon fusing mechanics characteristic of the main series, I haven't actually been using them very much. This is because it adds something else that I find works better--evolution. Not all demons can evolve, but there are enough of them to fill out your party at virtually every level range, and evolving is basically the only way to get demons at a higher level than your current protagonist level (they can exceed him by up to four). Furthermore, evolved demons keep all of their skills, compared to a transfer limit of two to four for fusion. And early in the game when you can only have 8 demons with you (I'm level 27 and this is still the case) it's much easier to do things this way since your fusion options are rather limited.

Whoop I'm not doing a good job of keeping up with this. But really, not much has happened. I've progressed through exactly one dungeon since the last time I wrote and it only took about 6 hours. Yeahhhhhhhh

I feel like I should keep some documentation of my Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne playthrough and yes you can blame Ten for this and any future posts on the subject.
